It’s Just Bad Football

This weekend I had high hopes for my teams to all come out victorious in their respective match-ups, given the opposition and, for the two NFL teams, home-field advantage.  Was I wrong…

Things started badly on Thursday, when the Miami Dolphins were shut out at home by the Chicago Bears.  Now, this isn’t quite as awful as it sounds, the Fins have been decimated by injuries, particularly at the QB position, and the Bears are playing better than expected.  But even with Tyler Thigpen at the helm, you’d like to think that they’d have managed to put some points on the board.  To add insult to injury, I meant to back the Under for this game, which was 39.5, but it totally slipped my mind when I was out at band practice that evening.

Onto the SPL, and Motherwell away to lowly St Mirren.  Not an easy tie by any manner of means, but reasonable to think that ‘Well should be winning games like this.  The Saints took the lead in the first half but ‘Well responded in the 2nd with a cracker from on-loan Blackburn striker Nick Blackman.  The game finished 1-1, neither team can complain.

Finally last night the 49ers took on the resurgent Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Candlestick Park.  Sitting at 3-6, this was a must win game for the Niners, if they retained any hopes of winning the NFC West.  The Bucs however, gave them a lesson in how a young team should play.  Josh Freeman was excellent and the Tampa D easily contained the Niners woeful offense.  The 49ers laid an egg, losing 21-0.  Now their season is effectively over, it’s time for a change in SF.  Singletary, much as I like him, doesn’t have the goods and we need to replace him with an experienced coach – John Gruden, anyone?  The Alex Smith experiment has gone on far too long, and has held the team back.  Give Troy Smith the rest of the season to see what he’s got, and cut Alex and David Carr in the off-season, while looking for a rookie in the draft.

As if all that wasn’t bad enough, I’d bet the Jets to win by 9.5 during their game with the Texans, when they were 3 points up.  They went on to take a 23-7 lead in the 4th quarter and all looked well, even when Houston added a field goal.  Then with less than 10 minutes remaining,  Shonn Greene fumbled…the Texans scored 2 quick touchdowns and my bet was wiped out.  Still, at least the Jets were going to lose?  Always a good thing, eh?  Well, no.  The Texans yet again fail to do the simplest of tasks and New York go 72 yards in less than a minute to pull another win out the bag.  Now…if I back to Jets to win it all, will I jinx them…can’t bear to see Sanchez and Ryan as champions…
